Prolegomena to the History of Israel is by Julius Wellhausen. The preface says the work which forms the greater part of the volume first appeared in 1878 under the title History of Israel. By J. Wellhausen. In two volumes. Volume I. The preface says the book produced a great impression throughout Europe, and that its main thesis was that the Mosaic history is not the starting-point for the history of ancient Israel, but for the history of Judaism.
The text says the system of high places (Bamoth), with all the apparatus thereto belonging, is certainly Canaanite originally. The text says Shechem, Bethel, Beersheba figure in Genesis as instituted by the patriarchs. The text says it becomes necessary that Samuel, who anointed Saul, should sorrowfully reject him. The text speaks of one who first knows Himself, not in emotion but in sober quietness, to be God's child.
