About this book
The Adductor Muscles of the Jaw In Some Primitive Reptiles is by Richard C. Fox and carries the date May 18, 1964. The paper says that information about osteological changes in the groups of reptiles that gave rise to mammals is preserved in the fossil record, "but the musculature of these reptiles has been lost forever."
One stated aim is to "learn the causes of the appearance and continued expansion of the temporal fenestrae among the reptilian ancestors of mammals". The skulls of Captorhinus are described as differing "considerably from those of the skulls of the primitive captorhinomorph Protorothyris," with adductor chambers "considerably wider than they were primitively." The teeth of Dimetrodon are called "clearly stabbing devices" that "are not modified at all for grinding". Of Captorhinus, the text says the diet "is less certain, but presumably it was insectivorous (Romer, 1928)."
