About this book
North American Recent Soft-Shelled Turtles (Family Trionychidae) describes turtles whose shell surfaces lack horny epidermal shields and are covered instead with soft skin. The account of general characters describes a fleshy, tubular projection at the end of the snout, jaws concealed by fleshy lips, a short tail and well-webbed digits. The anatomical description gives the head and neck as completely retractile, with bending by a sigmoid curve in a vertical plane.
The description of the plastron records a reduced structure, usually with a median opening, and bones developing sculpturing as size increases. The contents list collecting methods, materials and procedure, taxonomy, variation and secondary sexual variation.
