About this book
Two young Guards officers set out from Waterloo Station for France in the summer of 1916. One is called the Ensign, a familiar term for a second lieutenant; his companion, The Lad, fears that the fighting will end before he reaches the front. Their crowded train and transport introduce a military world of makeshift meals, advice from experienced soldiers and uncertainty about what comes next. Distant guns announce the battle of the Somme as they arrive.
Valentine Williams follows the Ensign through the demands and disturbing sights of active service. A late return to camp gives way to an early start, a platoon carrying supplies forward and the work of draining flooded trenches in a shattered wood. Humour in conversation sits beside exhaustion and the wreckage of battle. Readers interested in British accounts of the First World War can find a close view of junior officers, their small comforts and their sudden duties.
