About this book
S. Weir Mitchell wrote The Adventures of François, described as Foundling, Thief, Juggler, and Fencing-Master during the French Revolution. The contents list, among others, a chapter of how François the foundling was cared for by the good fathers of the Benedictine Asylum for Orphans, and of what manner of lad he was. Among others, the contents list a chapter in which François becomes a choir-boy, and serves two masters, to the impairment of his moral sense.
A character named Tomas the steward says, Little rats, you will squeal in purgatory for this. A character named François says, gaily, that rats had need be smart, and asks who ever heard that the bon Dieu sent rats to purgatory. The text says that when a man's head is set to save his head, it may not always be desirable to be accurate. The text says the central power in Paris was merciless to lawless violence which did not aid its own purposes.
