About this book
The False Chevalier, by W. D. Lighthall, carries the alternative title The Lifeguard of Marie Antoinette. The contents list names chapters called The Fur-Trader's Son, Germain in France and The Innkeeper's Lesson, among others. The landlord knocks at the door of Germain's room, steps in rather freely and says he regrets to tell him that it is the rule in Fontainebleau for travellers to pay in advance.
Germain replies with the words How much?, pulling out a purse full of pistoles. Collinot scans the de Lincy copies carefully, and pronounces that only the past two generations are lacking, naming a certificate of baptism, those of a father and mother, and their marriage contract. A man speaking to Madame says her name has always been to him a sacred adoration, and that he loved her from the first moment he saw her in the house of the Princess de Poix.
