The Adventurous Simplicissimus
A picaresque story set against the Thirty Years’ War, this German novel follows Simplicius, a peasant boy torn from his family by marauding soldiers and raised in the woods by a hermit. When the old man dies, the boy stumbles through a ruined Germany, serving in turn as a fool, a soldier, a thief, and finally a wanderer who turns his back on the world. Grimmelshausen drew on his own years in the fighting to render its cruelty and absurdity with rare honesty, and the result stands as one of the earliest great works of German prose fiction. Its mix of comedy, brutality, and moral reckoning has kept it alive for centuries. This free PDF and EPUB edition brings the English translation to modern readers.
