About this book
The American Printer describes itself as a manual of typography, with practical directions for managing all departments of a printing office and complete instructions for apprentices. The title page promises useful tables, schemes for imposing forms in every variety, and hints to authors. The paper-wetting directions describe folding down a corner of the upper sheet on the worker's right after wetting the first token.
The token-sheet serves as a mark for the pressman, showing how many tokens of a heap have been worked off during the work. The paper-wetting instructions call for a wrapper or waste sheet to be laid upon the whole heap once the heap has been wet.
