About this book
Applied Design for Printers is by Harry Lawrence Gage and is described as "A HANDBOOK OF THE PRINCIPLES OF ARRANGEMENT, WITH BRIEF COMMENT ON THE PERIODS OF DESIGN WHICH HAVE MOST STRONGLY INFLUENCED PRINTING." The foreword calls the book "This primer of design" and "an earnest effort to make intelligible to the apprentice student certain fundamental principles of arrangement and of ornamentation."
The text says "Any successful design will have the qualities of fitness and beauty." The text lists "Harmony," "Balance and proportion" and "Rhythm" among the characteristics that "appeal to the eye and mind." The text says William Morris, "in England," devoted "a very few years" to "a protest against the commonplace and mechanical qualities which had dominated printing previously," and "revived many of the old traditions."
