About this book
The American Spirit in Literature carries the subtitle A Chronicle of Great Interpreters and opens with a discussion of the exploration and development of a continent. The opening account connects American restlessness and temporary arrangements largely with the experimental character of that exploration and development. The account of English colonizers stresses that the settlers represented no single type of national character.
The discussion of Hawthorne identifies hypocrisy and revenge as the sins at issue and describes characters caught in a moral situation. The forest scene between Hester and Arthur is described as a moment when human passion bears down on the story's Puritan framework.
