The Anatomy of Vegetables Begun is a 1672 work by Nehemiah Grew (1641-1712), the English physician and botanist who, with Marcello Malpighi, founded the science of plant anatomy. Using the new microscope, Grew described the inner structure of roots, stems, and seeds for the first time, and he later identified the sexual function of flowers. A Fellow and secretary of the Royal Society, he turned the microscope on the plant world as Hooke had on the animal. The book is a landmark of early modern science.
