About this book
The introduction describes the work as an answer to accusations that the Reformation established a new Church, written in Latin to be read throughout Europe. The introduction says the English Church Reformers argued that they were returning to the old Church, looking back to the first centuries of Christianity. The introduction explains that an Apology originally meant a pleading intended to rebut an imputation.
The argument urges those professing the Gospel of Christ to bear mistreatment more quietly if they are handled in the same way for that cause. The text quotes Hilarius criticizing love of walls, worship of the Church in houses and buildings, and invoking the name of peace under roofs.
