About this book

The Arab Conquests in Central Asia is a book by H. A. R. Gibb. The contents list chapters on The Early Raids, The Conquests of Qutayba and The Turkish Counterstroke, among others. The text says the Turks of the five western tribes, who became independent after the break up of the Great Khanate about 582, maintained their suzerainty over Sogdiana and the middle Oxus basin by frequent expeditions.

The text says there is no trace in the records of extensive Turkish immigration into the conquered lands, and that the Jaxartes formed a natural racial and political frontier. The text says Qutayba, deeply affected by the loss of his patron and not a little uncertain of the effect on his own fortunes, disbanded the army, sending garrisons to Bukhārā, Kish, and Nasaf, and returned to Merv. The text says an expedition was sent into Khuttal by Abū Dāwud, the governor of Balkh, and that by this expedition Khuttal was effectively annexed to the Arab government for the first time.
