About this book
Thomas Barker brings forty years of fishing experience to a short handbook that treats success at the river as a matter of observation and practice. Printed in 1653, the work explains how sunlight, cloud, wind and the seasons should shape an angler's choice of tackle and bait. Trout receive close attention, from the lightness of a rod to the fineness of a line and the way an artificial fly reaches the water.
Instructions for making flies use materials such as wool, silk and feathers, while later passages turn to pike fishing in ponds and rivers. Barker writes directly to the reader, repeatedly linking small practical decisions to his own experience. His old spelling and detailed account of equipment give today's reader a close view of an earlier fishing culture, especially its reliance on handmade tackle and knowledge of changing conditions.
