About this book

C. W. Leadbeater gives an unseen realm the structure of a place that can be mapped and classified. Published in 1895, this Theosophical manual describes what he calls the astral plane, placing it within a series of levels beyond ordinary physical perception. He argues that trained observers can explore it, while warning that unfamiliar vision and changing appearances can mislead a beginner. These are claims within his spiritual system, presented with the organising habits of a reference book.

The sections move from scenery to inhabitants and phenomena, including nature spirits, apparitions and the practices of spiritualist gatherings. A passage on elemental essence divides it by density and character, then describes how passing thoughts supposedly alter its shapes. For readers studying Theosophy, the interest lies in the detailed vocabulary and categories used to explain an invisible world. The book also shows how Leadbeater connects spiritual development with the interpretation of unusual experiences.
