About this book

Dreams, apparitions and claims of unusual powers become subjects for classification in M. Schele de Vere's 1873 study of magic and occult belief. The author approaches them through a religious understanding of the soul, arguing that human spiritual powers may extend beyond ordinary bodily perception. His chapters range across witchcraft, visions, ghosts, divination, magnetism and mysticism. The preface sets out his wish to separate misleading appearances from what he considers evidence of a deeper reality.

Reported experiences give these arguments a narrative form. One account concerns Bezuel, a young priest who believes he has met the apparition of his drowned friend Desfontaines. Another describes a wounded man's claim to have visited his brother while unconscious. Schele de Vere weighs such stories as support for extraordinary perception. For readers studying nineteenth-century beliefs, the book shows how religious conviction, testimony and the ambition to investigate unexplained events could work together.
