Late in life Mark Twain gave up on writing his memoirs in order and began simply dictating them, wandering from subject to subject as memory led him. The result is a sprawling, candid, often very funny record of his boyhood in Missouri, his years on the river and out West, his triumphs and business disasters, and his blunt opinions on the people and politics of his day. He insisted that large parts stay unpublished until long after his death so he could speak freely about the living.
