About this book
A December fog turns London's Ramillies Street into a place where even a constable struggles to see what is happening. John Whyley encounters two men supporting a helpless companion outside Dr Chartley's surgery. They explain the scene as the aftermath of drinking, arrange a cab, and leave him wondering whether their behaviour was a performance.
George Manville Fenn's novel builds its mystery through uncertain impressions and uneasy encounters. In a later scene, Mark Heath arrives in distress, listens for pursuers, and startles at the doctor's touch. Chartley tries to assess his condition while offering the warmth of his consulting room. The contrast between ordinary medical care and a visitor's alarm gives the story its tension.
