About this book
On the morning of his wedding, naturalist Malcolm Stratton keeps checking the time in his oak-panelled chambers at Benchers’ Inn. He packs an ice axe and an alpenstock for the trip he hopes to share with Myra, while the porter’s wife runs a banking errand and his elderly neighbour offers an affectionate farewell. Books, specimens and carved doorways give the opening a closely observed London setting.
George Manville Fenn’s mystery novel sets that eager anticipation beside a later scene of damaged friendships. Stratton has withdrawn into solitude, and Percy Guest tries to bring him and Myra together again, with encouragement and resistance from Edie. Their exchanges mix concern, impatience and dry humour. Readers interested in suspense built through personal loyalties will find a story in which a friend’s persistence meets guarded replies, and the hope of an explanation keeps the conversation moving.
