About this book

A young visitor from the West Indies unsettles the Harewood household with demands that its children have been taught to avoid. Matilda Sophia Hanson arrives after her father's death while her mother remains abroad to settle his affairs. Accustomed to commanding servants, she treats courtesy as an affront to her importance. Mrs. Hofland makes the family's everyday exchanges, including an uncomfortable scene at dinner, the starting point for a children's story about temper and consideration.

The later excerpt brings these lessons into a more painful setting. After an accident, Matilda tries to comfort her distressed attendant, Zebby, and takes responsibility for her own conduct. Dialogue and the narrator's moral commentary connect manners with sympathy for others. The story offers a view of early children's moral fiction, including its colonial assumptions and its criticism of a child's domineering behaviour.
