About this book
A train ride to Indianapolis gives Dotty and her young cousin Katie plenty to talk about before they visit a school for blind children. Dotty puzzles over raised letters, classroom routines and the beadwork displayed for visitors. Her questions, and Katie's eager chatter, make this opening episode a close look at children's curiosity and the assumptions adults help them correct.
Sophie May's children's novel mixes family affection with lessons about conduct. A later scene finds Dotty distressed when her father requires her to remain at Mrs. Rosenberg's house after an unauthorized visit. Her protests set off a noisy response from the household, its dog and its parrot. Readers interested in older children's fiction will find everyday mishaps, lively dialogue and a clear concern with how small choices bring consequences.
