About this book

The Battle of Gettysburg is by Frank Aretas Haskell, aide-de-camp to General John Gibbon. A quoted account describes Colonel Haskell, who was so largely instrumental in saving the day at Gettysburg, and the order Lie down, men, which was the last order he ever gave. The text describes the July sun streaming down on the muskets in stacks upon the crest, and an army that lolls and longs for the shade.

The text says that a thought occurred to Gen. Gibbon and several of his staff that it would be a very good thing, and a very good time, to have something to eat. The speaker says he had not tasted a mouthful of food since yesterday noon. The text says the writer's own men were buried in graves, not trenches, with the name and regiment of the one buried neatly cut or penciled upon a piece of board, or stave of a barrel, or bit of cracker box, placed at the head.
