About this book
At Iuka in September 1862, the Eleventh Ohio Battery faced an attack at distances of less than fifty yards. Henry M. Neil recalls the action from his place among the officers, explaining how wooded ground, an exposed flank and the loss of horses shaped the fighting. His account opens by comparing the long range of newer artillery with the close conditions his battery encountered during the American Civil War.
Prepared as a paper for the Ohio Commandery of the Loyal Legion in 1909, the narrative also follows the battery as it gathers recruits, horses and equipment before moving to Corinth. Neil combines personal recollection with official reports and descriptions of the guns. Readers interested in regimental history can follow the practical pressures behind military movements: uncertain information, orders that demand quick decisions, and the work of restoring a unit for further service.
