About this book
At a country inn and a gentleman's house, borrowed identities turn social ambition into a comedy of manners. George Farquhar's 1707 play follows Archer and Aimwell as their disguises draw them into a world of money, courtship and uneasy marriages. Boniface the landlord, the servant Scrub and Mrs. Sullen each bring a different voice to the action, with household life supplying opportunities for both schemes and sharp exchanges.
A conversation with Mrs. Sullen and Dorinda shows Archer entertaining his listeners with an elaborate account of a former employer's messages. His performance moves from talk about service and wages to a song that pokes fun at fashionable society, empty promises and the pursuit of status. Readers interested in stage comedy will find quick dialogue and characters whose social positions shape what they can say, demand or pretend to be.
