About this book
Books cover Valentine's table, but his servant Jeremy wants to know how philosophy will pay the household's debts. This opening exchange sets the tone for William Congreve's London comedy, where clever talk keeps colliding with practical needs. Valentine's costly habits have angered his father, Sir Sampson Legend, and he loves Angelica, a woman with a fortune of her own. Around them move outspoken friends, servants and relatives with competing ideas about love and marriage.
Ben, Valentine's brother, brings the language and temper of the sea into this social world. His quarrel with Miss Prue turns a proposed match into an exchange of insults, while Mrs. Foresight and Mrs. Frail welcome the dispute and try to conceal it from the fathers. The play offers readers a close view of how money, family authority and personal preference complicate courtship, with character revealed through brisk arguments and jokes.
