Sir Charles remarks to Mr. Bathurst that there is a great gulf between fiction and real life, and the reply asks for a fair start with Scotland Yard and its resources to call upon, if necessary, with a wager on the result. Answering Captain Arkwright, a speaker says he is a trained man, one who has trained himself to observe and to remember. Webb whitens, even under his normal pallor, when a more serious charge than robbery is raised. The narrator hears that Anthony was nowhere to be found, having breakfasted very early and excused himself to the others upon an errand of some importance.
