The Black Phone

The Black Phone by Joe Hill is one of his strongest short novels, the source of the Scott Derrickson film with Ethan Hawke. A boy is kidnapped by a serial killer and held in a basement where a disconnected black phone keeps ringing.

Joe Hill is Stephen King’s son and writes in a recognisably similar tradition while building his own voice. The book is short, sharp, and excellent horror.
