Published under a shortened version of his name for years so that editors would judge the work rather than his father, and had built a reputation on short stories before anyone connected Joe Hill to Stephen King.

Heart-Shaped Box gives an aging rock star a ghost bought online. NOS4A2 sends children to a place called Christmasland. Locke and Key, drawn by Gabriel Rodriguez, is the comics work and may be the best thing he has done.

The horror is more emotionally exposed than his father's and less interested in small-town scale. He has been open that the pen name eventually became impossible to maintain and that he does not regret trying.
