The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable is a book by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, first published in 2007. Taleb, a former trader and essayist, defines a black swan as an event that is a surprise, has a major effect and is afterwards explained as if it could have been predicted.
He argues that such rare events shape history, science and markets far more than ordinary ones, and that people are poor at seeing them coming. The book mixes argument, anecdote and personal reflection, and belongs to Taleb's Incerto series, which also includes Fooled by Randomness.
