About this book
Sue Monk Kidd's novel "The Book of Longings" tells the story of Ana, a headstrong and intelligent woman born into a wealthy family in Galilee and connected to the region's ruler. Ana secretly indulges in scholarly activities and writes narratives about women who have been overlooked and silenced. She is horrified at the prospect of marrying an older widower, a fate expected of her.
Her life takes a turn when she encounters Jesus. Their marriage unfolds with love, disagreements, humor, and emotional depth in Nazareth. As resistance against Rome’s occupation of Israel intensifies, so do Ana’s longings. Her audacious aunt Yaltha, who holds a captivating secret, supports her. After committing an act that endangers her, Ana escapes to Alexandria, finding sanctuary in the most unexpected places. The novel is a moving portrayal of a woman’s daring journey to fulfill her dreams and potential in a time and culture designed to suppress her.”
