About this book
In Jerusalem around 167 years before the Christian era, a young Athenian poet seeks examples of moral courage for an ambitious poem. Lycidas finds them among Hebrews facing the rule of Antiochus Epiphanes. His admiration for their steadfast faith brings him into an uneasy conversation with Pollux, a court favourite whose position depends on pleasing the king.
A. L. O. E. builds this historical novel around Judas Maccabeus and resistance to Syrian rule. Scenes of religious persecution and conflict sit beside the private pressures of conscience, loyalty and royal favour. The author's preface acknowledges changes to the historical timing and explains her Christian interest in Jewish history. The story offers a strongly moral interpretation of ancient events, with particular attention to the difference between public honours and personal integrity.
