About this book
Sea routes and island coasts give Dorothy Mills a starting point for explaining ancient Greek life. Her account follows Greece from its early Aegean setting to the loss of independence in 146 B.C., bringing the history of Crete, Sparta and Athens into a wider Mediterranean picture. Chapters on schools, houses, pottery and dramatic festivals place everyday activities beside political change. The opening describes the practical difficulties faced by sailors who travelled between the islands and mainland.
The discussion of Athens makes civic life especially concrete. Wealthy citizens support naval ships or theatrical choruses, while jury service and meetings of the Assembly involve citizens in public decisions. Mills explains the physical arrangement of the Pnyx as well as the business conducted there. Developed from her history teaching, this introduction offers readers a way to connect Greek government with the work, customs and shared spaces that sustained it.
