About this book

A Day in Old Athens; a Picture of Athenian Life describes what an intelligent visitor might see and hear in ancient Athens under competent guidance, with a hypothetical visit set in 360 B.C. The preface says that rare happenings have been omitted and that probable matters have sometimes been stated as ascertained facts to avoid long explanations, while calling such instances few. The section on the school curriculum names letters, music, and gymnastics as its fixed and limited subjects, with every lad required to have some of each.

The discussion of food identifies bread, oil, and wine as the three fundamentals of Greek diet, and names wheat and barley as the preferred grains for bread. The account of dress says that a Greek lady needs a carefully adjusted himation whenever she appears outside the house.
