About this book
The Book of the Ladies is credited to Pierre de Bourdeille Brantôme. The front matter says the book comes with an introductory essay by C.-A. Sainte-Beuve and is an unexpurgated rendition into English. The contents list names discourses on Anne de Bretagne, Queen of France, and on Catherine de’ Medici, Queen, and mother of our last kings, among others.
An account of Brantôme's life says the death of Sultan Suleiman stopped the invasion for one year at least, and that Brantôme reluctantly decided to return to France. The text says Brantôme was commissioned in 1571 to go to the port of Brouage and direct the preparations for the armament. An honourable French gentleman is quoted as saying it would have sufficed to declare she was the semblance and image of the Queen of Navarre, unique in this world. A description of one princess calls her the sweetest, best, humblest, and most affable princess that could ever be seen.
