About this book
The Booming of Acre Hill and Other Reminiscences of Urban and Suburban Life is by John Kendrick Bangs, illustrated by C. Dana Gibson and published in New York and London, 1902. Among others, the contents list names The Strange Misadventures of an Organ, The Plot That Failed, The Mayor's Lamps and Jarley's Thanksgiving.
A passage about Acre Hill says that where sixteen empty houses had been there were now sixty all occupied and lots were going like hot cakes, and that society flocked to Acre Hill and hobnobbed with Acre Hillians. In a scene about lamps, a character named Mrs. Perkins suggests "Maybe they'd let us buy three lamps instead of two," and Perkins observes "Well, we won't, even if they do let us." A character named Upton says it will be a terrible test for Walter, he is afraid, and that breakfast, for instance, is a fearful ordeal for most men.
