About this book

Four siblings leave a village at night with bread, a few belongings and little money, determined to stay together. Henry, Jess, Violet and five-year-old Benny have lost both parents and fear being sent to a grandfather they scarcely know. In Gertrude Chandler Warner's 1924 children's novel, their first refuge is a haystack beside a country road. The older children plan each move, while Violet's stories help Benny through the long walk.

Life in the woods brings a different set of challenges: finding food, cooking over a fire and arranging work without drawing attention to the family. Their railway car becomes a home, and small discoveries, including walnuts and a hen's hidden eggs, matter as much as larger adventures. Short chapters and direct dialogue keep the focus on practical decisions and sibling cooperation. Readers interested in childhood independence will find a story built around ordinary tasks made urgent by uncertainty.
