Glory and her blind grandfather keep their tiny New York home as neatly as a ship. Wedged between warehouses in Elbow Lane, their single room holds hammocks, a small stove and the tools of their daily work. She mends neighbors' clothes and sells peanuts; he carves picture frames and sings in the streets, guided by his dog, Bo'sn. Their talk turns often to Sailors' Snug Harbor, which Glory imagines as a place of comfort and plenty.
Evelyn Raymond's children's novel follows that hopeful view of life into a search for the missing grandfather. When a richly dressed toddler appears, Glory takes the child for a guardian angel who can help her find him. Meanwhile, the landlord is considering taking away their home. Affectionate dialogue and the details of earning a living give this story its character, with a young girl's trust set against the uncertainty of city poverty.
