About this book

The Boy Allies at Liège, or Through Lines of Steel, is by Clair W. Hayes. Chapter I, headed The Two Comrades, has Hal shout that war has been declared as he dashes into the great hotel in Berlin with his friend, Chester Crawford. Hal tells his mother, seeing the look of consternation on Mrs. Paine's face, that the Kaiser has declared war upon France.

Chester leaps forward with a sudden cry and seizes the hand holding a knife, just as the weapon would have been buried in Hal's back. A captain tells the lads they are ordered to hold themselves subject to the command of their superior officer, who is the captain himself. Chapter XIII, headed Chester Saves the Day, says the battle had raged from the first break of dawn and at mid-day was at its height. Chester recognizes a horseman in the dim light, and his spirits rise.
