About this book
The title page says the book consists of parts of Pliny’s Natural History, edited for boys and girls, with an introduction by John S. White. The contents give an account of the world and the elements, with chapters titled “Of Thunder and Lightning” and “Nature of the Earth”.
A narrator tells of an uncle who called twice for some cold water, which he drank, and who instantly fell down dead, suffocated, as the narrator conjectures, by the noxious vapor, having always had a weak throat. The narrator says a trembling of the earth had been noticed for many days before, which did not alarm them much, as this is quite an ordinary occurrence in Campania. On coral, the text says the reddest coral and the most branchy is held in the highest esteem, though it must not be rough or hard like stone. A note says that the account of the basilisk’s eye, like that of the catoblepas, is entirely devoid of foundation.
