About this book
Geological Observations on South America is a work by Charles Darwin. An editorial note says that, although in some respects more technical in their subjects and style than Darwin’s Journal, the books here reprinted will never lose their value and interest. The contents list, among others, chapters on the elevation of the eastern coast of South America and on the formations of the Pampas. The contents also name, among others, central Chile and the structure of the Cordillera.
Darwin writes that he believes these curious trappean masses have been injected from the not far distant mountain-mass of andesite whilst still fluid. Under a heading for Coquimbo, the text describes a narrow fringe-like plain, gently inclined towards the sea, that here extends for eleven miles along the coast. The text says that at Port Famine much of the clay-slate is calcareous, and passes either into a mudstone or into grauwacke.
