About this book
The Bravest of the Brave has the subtitle Or, With Peterborough in Spain and is by G. A. Henty. The contents list includes, among others, chapters called The War of the Succession, Impressed and The Sergeant's Yarn. The preface says there are few great leaders whose lives and actions have so completely fallen into oblivion as those of the Earl of Peterborough.
The text says Louis XIV lulled the fears of the Austrian party by suggesting a treaty of partition to the Dutch states and William the Third of England. The earl offers two young aides de camp the option of marching away with the infantry, saying, “It is not that I doubt your courage, lads, for I marked you both under fire at Montjuich, but the fatigues will be terrible.” A speaker says he was in a place about six feet square that was perfectly bare, without as much as a bit of straw to lie on, and that two monks came in.
