About this book

A Boston boy, still short of fifteen, begins recording his part in the American Revolution at the urging of his friend Archie Hemming. From the Cambridge camp, he looks back on the closing of Boston's port, the shortage of food and the growing presence of British troops. James Otis tells this historical adventure through a young participant whose confidence in the colonial cause runs through every recollection.

The boys form their own company, taking the name Minute Boys of Boston and hoping to help the adults around them. A later scene places the narrator among exhausted workers building defenses on Breed's Hill as British forces prepare to cross from Boston. His questions about reinforcements bring fear and uncertainty into the patriotic account. Written for younger readers, the story offers a view of revolutionary events through friendship, practical work and the anxious wait before a battle.
