About this book
The Breath of the Gods is by Sidney McCall, who inscribes the book to Yamato Damashii. A prefatory note says the characters are wholly imaginary, and no incident is based on any real incident known to the writer. The note says that most, if not all, of the questions, remarks, and speculations put into the mouths of peasants and servants have been overheard by the writer.
Chapter One opens on the stone dwelling of Senator Cyrus C. Todd. Mr. Todd reaches his daughter and whispers, It's come, little girl; asked whether mother knows, the senator admits, Not yet. Tetsujo, after a long pause, begins an heroic epic of the Heiké clan, and Iriya turns away to kneel, in her room, before the ancestral shrine.
