About this book

Treat 'em Rough, with the subtitle Letters from Jack the Kaiser Killer, is by Ring Lardner. A letter dated Camp Grant, Sept. 23 begins with the words FRIEND AL and says the writer is writing in the recreation room at the barracks. The writer says a train stopped at a burg called Aurora and a bunch of the boys needed air so they got off. A little guy takes a trombone away from the trombone blower while he sleeps and says he is willing to give his life for Uncle Sam but is not going to die to no trombone music.

A letter says a captain told a man he would not stand for any more of his monkey business and would call him up in front of the court marshall if he did not behave himself. The writer says he asked the little girl in a farewell note to send her picture, and that if she sent it up to Camp Grant maybe 1 of them rummys might get a hold of it.
