About this book
The Butterfly Guide is by W. J. Holland. The title page calls the book a pocket manual for the ready identification of the commoner species found in the United States and Canada. The title page adds that the book has 295 Colored Figures Representing 255 Species and Varieties.
The text on the subfamily The Nymphs says that the butterflies belonging to this subfamily are usually medium-sized or large, although some are very small. The text recalls a field near Cresson on the summit of the Allegheny Mountains, surrounded by woodland in which violets grew, where myriads of Fritillaries congregated when the clover was in bloom. The entry for Pyrrhopyge araxes Hewitson gives its expanse as 2.25-2.50 inches and says it is found in Texas, Arizona, and southward.
