About this book

The Butterfly Book describes how a caterpillar withdraws from its old skin, leaving a cast that retains even the hairs and spines replaced on the emerging creature. The account says the vast majority of butterfly caterpillars live on vegetable food, with the exception already noted of larvae feeding upon scale-insects. Some Hesperiidæ have larvae that burrow in the roots and stems of vegetation.

The discussion of larval duration says that, in temperate climates, the majority of species spend two to three months as caterpillars, or ten months where hibernation occurs. Many hibernating caterpillars enter that state immediately after emerging from the egg, before their first moult, although the great majority hibernate after one or more moults. A few species spend hibernation together, constructing a shelter from leaves woven together with strands of silk.
