About this book
Farm work becomes a lively social occasion as the Camp Fire Girls pitch hay, share lunch and tease one another outdoors. Bessie King challenges the idea that women have an easy life on a farm, while Dolly Ransom enjoys provoking Walter Stubbs. Their conversation gives the outdoor scenes a mixture of friendly affection, sharp remarks and practical concerns.
Later, the mood turns anxious when Bessie searches mountain paths for Dolly, who has been carried away from camp. She waits for daylight, follows footprints across softened ground and questions a frightened girl about the missing friend's captor. For readers interested in older children's adventure stories, the story brings together the habits of camp life, everyday friendship and a search that calls for patience and observation.
