About this book
John Codman Ropes's military history of the Waterloo campaign gives detailed discussion of the days in June 1815 before the battle. One note takes up what Thiers and Chesney said about the health of Napoleon. A passage sets out the Emperor's reasoning: he put a force in front of Fleurus to meet the Prussians, planned for Ney's corps to hold Quatre Bras the next morning, and left Sombreffe unoccupied for fear that Blucher would retire without a battle.
A letter from Baron Fain to Joseph Bonaparte, dated Charleroi on 15 June, says the Emperor has returned very tired after being on horseback since three in the morning. Another passage describes a line along a ridge, with the Chateau of Hougomont about 350 yards in front at its extreme right. The index lists names and places such as Brunswick, Brussels, Brye and Bulow.
