The title page calls this book the reminiscences of scenes and incidents that occurred in California in early mining days, by a pioneer, with text and illustrations drawn from life by C. W. Haskins. A note before the text says that the author added the names of about 35,000 of those who were first to venture out in search of gold, among them several thousand then living.
The pages are made of stories and tall tales. One tells of a ship in a gale in which the captain decides to run before the wind despite the warnings of veteran skippers, with the ship heading in the direction of Cape Horn. Another is a tall tale told by Julius, in dialect, about mosquitoes whose bills were chopped off and sold to hotels as toothpicks. Jeff is reminded of a specimen of his own cooking. The list of names gives the steamer, the port and the date, as with the Maria Burt from New Orleans.
