About this book
The Cathedral Builders is subtitled The Story of a Great Masonic Guild. Leader Scott, an honorary member of the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, writes about the Lombard guild of builders and its place in the history of church building. The book includes a frontispiece of the twelfth-century cloister of S. John Lateran in Rome, and a detailed index of places, monasteries and names.
One passage discusses how abbots, prelates and bishops joined the guild, gave designs for their own churches and put their monks to the manual labour, and how the early Popes had to ask the Lombard kings for architects. Another passage looks at the churches of Pistoja, comparing the work of the sculptor Gruamons at S. Andrea with the facade of S. Bartolommeo by a later sculptor and noting how quickly carving of the human figure improved. Giovanni Villani's account of how Florence was founded is also cited.
